Save and grow more with LED plant growth lighting

LumiGrow, Pro Series 650

Using traditional grow lights for horticultural applications can be costly and time consuming. These lights for plants use vast amounts of heat and light energy and operate on a fixed colour spectrum. Additionally, suboptimal growing conditions can be created by delivering the same amplitude of light waves for photosynthesis regardless of the nutrient requirements for different plant varieties.

Finding energy efficient solutions that encourages consistent growth of all plants throughout the seasons can achieve the best results without the high operating costs.

Light-emitting diodes (or LED) as an alternative to traditional plant growth lighting has been proven in recent years to be more energy efficient for faster plant growth. Advancing developments have found the intensity and spectral wavelengths offered by LED lighting can be adjusted to change the taste of consumable plants, grow more marketable produce and create bigger yields from faster plant growth.

Bioline Global’s range of LumiGrow LED lighting is proven to be less expensive to grow bigger plants than fluorescent lighting systems. If your facility uses a controlled environment for horticultural applications, LumiGrow LED lighting can provide a dependable yearly production of plant growth to extend your growing season.

Benefits of LED lighting for plant growth

The position of light sources relative to plant photosynthetic surfaces has a direct effect on plant growth. LED grow lights use a diode that generates virtually no heat. Compared to scorching hot, high-intensity discharge emitters, smaller in size LED lighting has a cool light-emitting surface that can be brought closer to plant tissues for fast growth.

In addition to lighting position for plant growth, the spectral quality of LED lights means specific wavelengths can be selected for a targeted plant response. Studies have shown how blue, red and green LED lighting combinations improve photosynthesis in plants, and can affect anatomy and morphology, nutrient uptake and pathogen development. [1] A study performed by LumiGrow demonstrated the adjustable effects of LED blue light treatments on growing basil had an enhanced effect on plant morphology, flavour and aroma. [2]

The adjustable colour matching within the light spectrum means peak-growing conditions can be mimicked for every plant variety.

LED versus fluorescent lighting

Fluorescent lighting systems are often used to grow grafted plants in controlled greenhouse environments.

However, fluorescent lighting can be large and block sunlight from reaching the plant canopy. In 2013, a Missouri farmer growing lettuce found switching from fluorescent to LumiGrow LED lighting bars gave extra light and a steady year-long supply of healthy, dense lettuce. Within 10 months the farm had recovered the LED lighting investment cost with the extra light translating to a 38% gain of yearly profit. [3]

Fluorescent light also use a fixed spectrum that is often at the cooler end of the spectrum and not quite as close to natural light. In 2016, a study compared LED lighting to cool white fluorescent (CWF) lighting for grafted tomato seedling growth, healing and acclimation over two weeks. Healing during the grafting process is crucial for tomato seedling propagation and is usually performed using CWF lighting. The study found using LED lighting to propagate grafted tomatoes had a 31% increase in plant height compared to CWF lighting and could heal grafted tomatoes as well as CWF lighting. [4]

The Bioline Global range of LumiGrow LED lighting

Bioline Global offers a range of LumiGrow lighting and accessories that come with a five-year warranty. The lighting has a linear strip hardware configuration ideal for use in plant lighting designs that minimises plant canopy shadowing.

LumiGrow LED lighting has demonstrated success for growers and researchers looking for solutions. Case studies have shown benefits of installing LumiGrow LED lighting, including:

  • Fixtures use a lower electrical draw meaning fewer circuits and less wiring were installed. The facility did not need to upgrade their power supply, which is an expensive process.
  • Increases the photons received by plants so that all plant varieties have improved quality of light. The facility was able to increase their yield and production by two months, achieving shortened harvest times and a year-round plant production.
  • Less energy and costs used to operate than light sources that radiate heat and light energy. The aquaponics facility found LEDs are three times more energy-efficient, which resulted in a 70% reduction in monthly lighting energy costs.
