Water Purification Systems – Vital For Reliable Clinical Research

Working in a biological research laboratory means relying on equipment or scientific applications that need a pure water supply free from contaminants.

Water that contains impurities can harm expensive laboratory assets and cause variability in your scientific outputs. Many substances found in tap water, such as particles, microorganisms or inorganic ions can interfere with equipment and sterile applications, which are harmful to your research.

Having a centralised water purification system is an efficient way to supply pure water in your laboratory. Different grades of water purity are produced by these systems in laboratories that meet international water standards.

Researchers at life science and bioengineering laboratories should be familiar with standards of quality in water purification and apply the water grade most applicable to their laboratory’s research needs. Having reliable research will allow your laboratory to make the best scientific and economic decisions long-term.

Purified water quality standards

Unlike tap water, purified water is classified into grades or types of water purification. The different grades can be used in laboratories for various requirements depending on the research. [1]

These grades have been described by international standard setting organisations the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for water purification in research laboratories. *

  • ASTM Type 1 and ISO Grade 1 – water of the highest purity or ultrapure water virtually free from contaminants with a high resistivity to electrical conduction. However these waters must be appropriately specified for end use requirements and are generally used for critical applications, such as trace analysis.
  • ASTM Type 2 and ISO Grade 2 –pure water containing small amounts of residue, some conductivity of inorganic chemicals (ions) and trace bacteria levels. These waters are suitable for preparing culture media and for many microbiology and bacteriology procedures.
  • ASTM Type 3 and ISO Grade 3 –pure water that is pH sensitive, and contain amounts of residue, higher levels of bacteria and conductivity of inorganic chemicals (ions). This grade of water is generally useful for glass washing, incubator/humidity cabinets and similar applications.

It’s important to be familiar with which grade of water purity applies most to your laboratory. For example, there is no need to use the most expensive grade of water to wash glassware. Ultrapure (Type 1) high resistivity water can corrode laboratory equipment if not applied appropriately and can be too pure or not economical for routine applications.

How does Bioline Global’s purified water system work?

Bioline Global’s water purification systems use reverse osmosis (RO) and electro-deionisation technology to remove minerals, bacteria, particles and pyrogens from water. RO is a versatile water purification process that can effectively remove ionic and organic contaminants and particles. The result is pure, impurity-free water that is ready to use in your laboratory.

RO systems work by applying external pressure to one side the membrane where water is fed into the system to reverse the natural osmotic flow. The feed water is then forced through the semipermeable membrane, leaving the impurities deposited on the surface, and the product water free of impurities. For the system to work it depends on the effectiveness of the filter membrane.

The Bioline Premium range of water systems have a high efficiency RO membrane with additional RO modules in case of scale build up. The range includes electro-deionisation technology to purify water, which is a process that removes ions from the feed water using synthetic resins. The bed of resins is permanently regenerating using an electric current to keep producing a high level of water purity.
